I realize it’s days later at this point, but I just wanted to write down a few opinions I had about opening night now that I’ve let it sit for a bit.
Blue Stars: Not gonna lie, I was very skeptical about the uniform choice when I first saw it, but I’ve actually grown to like it. The brass is just as powerful as last year and the drill is very impressive. I’m really excited to see where this show goes.
Phantom Regiment: One of my favorite shows of the night, and the one that I think has the most potential for improvement. I absolutely love the uniform design and the corps looks just as good as ever. The tenor feature had me smiling like a little kid and I’m all for trombones. The guard is incredibly impressive as always, and the way the tarp effects the staging gives this show a very unique design scheme. I very much like the trend of keeping a part of the field open in the middle so that there is no pit between the performers and the audience, especially as a photographer. Please let me see more of this show.
Boston Crusaders: As a Florida resident, Boston is the home team (as little sense as that makes). My favorite thing about this show is the tarp that spans the entire height of the field on side 2. The spinning prop made for a lot of cool moments and the brass can really play this year (not surprising). Really excited to see where this show goes as well.
Bluecoats: If you know me, you know I’ve been a Bluecoat fanboy since high school. They inspired my first video that kicked off this whole site. The Bluecoats’ 2018 show is… odd. And that’s not a bad thing. The giant moving chairs are a really interesting touch and the vocalist is incredible. The corps is moving and playing at the same top-notch level they have been in the past few years. This show is a lot to take in. It’s one that I’d have to see again, but I can tell this is top-3 potential. It’s very Bluecoats, that’s for sure.
The Cavaliers: This show might just be my favorite design of the night. I found myself saying out loud multiple times during the performance, “they’re back.” The drill is classic Cavies with a modern flare. I was reminded multiple times of 2011’s XtraordinarY. This show is a fun watch from beginning to end. I’d love to see this one live.
Carolina Crown: There’s a lot of cool stuff happening here. The brass, of course, is the Carolina Crown brass. There’s not anything like it. The all-female hair-down feature in the middle was a very cool thing to see. The first thing I thought after “Wow, that was cool,” is, “How the heck do they get their hair back into those hats so fast.” The half-pipe-like prop at the end was really cool. I definitely enjoyed myself the most during the closer. As always, they’re a top-contender this year.
I don’t think I’ve said anything that controversial, but keep in mind these are just opinions. Let me know what you think!
